The Rude Word Painting
c.2008 in Istanbul, Turkey, I had observed artists and authors being incarcerated by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan’s government. I was fascinated that what might be perceived as offensive in Turkish would not be understood by an English only reader and speaker. By the same token, English would not be understood by Turkish only readers and speakers. Hence, I painted the rudest words I could think of in English and observed my studio cleaner and residential apartment block door man, neither of whom spoke English, look at the colours without any idea of the abusive language. Offense is in the eye of the beholder?
